If the issue does not return, it was likely transient.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">02&nbsp;Make sure there\u2019s enough free space on the startup volume<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>macOS needs&nbsp;<strong>10\u201320&nbsp;%<\/strong>&nbsp;of free disk space for swap files, APFS snapshots, and system updates. Check with&nbsp;<strong>\uf8ff&nbsp;&gt; System Settings&nbsp;&gt; General&nbsp;&gt; Storage<\/strong>&nbsp;and remove large or unneeded files.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">03&nbsp;(Obsolete) Repair permissions<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Since&nbsp;<strong>OS&nbsp;X&nbsp;El&nbsp;Capitan\u202f(10.11)<\/strong>&nbsp;the system protects its own files automatically; Disk Utility no longer offers a \u201cRepair Permissions\u201d button. Forget about this step.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">04&nbsp;Run First&nbsp;Aid on the startup disk<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>macOS\u00a0Sequoia<\/strong>: open\u00a0<strong>Disk Utility \u203a First\u00a0Aid<\/strong>\u00a0on your APFS volume.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If the Mac won\u2019t boot: enter\u00a0<strong>macOS\u00a0Recovery<\/strong>\u00a0(hold Power on Apple\u00a0Silicon, or \u2318\u2011R on Intel) and run First\u00a0Aid from there.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">05&nbsp;Create a new user account<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Create a temporary user under&nbsp;<strong>\uf8ff&nbsp;&gt; System Settings&nbsp;&gt; Users &amp;&nbsp;Groups<\/strong>. If the problem disappears when logged into the new account, the issue is confined to the original user\u2019s Library.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">06&nbsp;Clear system and user caches&nbsp;<em>(only if necessary)<\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>macOS normally prunes caches automatically. You can force a clean\u2011up by booting into&nbsp;<strong>Safe&nbsp;Mode<\/strong>&nbsp;(see step&nbsp;08) or manually deleting&nbsp;<code>~\/Library\/Caches<\/code>, but do this only when troubleshooting a clear cache\u2011related problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">07&nbsp;Removed \u2013 Force system prebinding<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The&nbsp;<code>update_prebinding<\/code>&nbsp;command disappeared after OS&nbsp;X&nbsp;Snow&nbsp;Leopard; the functionality is baked into modern macOS.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">08&nbsp;Boot in Safe&nbsp;Mode<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Apple\u00a0Silicon<\/strong>: shut down \u2192 press and hold Power until Startup Options appear \u2192 select your volume \u2192 hold\u00a0<strong>Shift<\/strong>\u00a0and click\u00a0<strong>Continue in Safe Mode<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Intel<\/strong>: power on while holding\u00a0<strong>Shift<\/strong>.<br>Safe\u00a0Mode disables third\u2011party extensions, clears certain caches, and performs a disk check on startup.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">09&nbsp;Reset NVRAM\/PRAM<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Intel<\/strong>: power on and hold\u00a0<strong>\u2325\u2011\u2318\u2011P\u2011R<\/strong>\u00a0for two startup chimes.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Apple\u00a0Silicon<\/strong>: a normal restart resets NVRAM automatically; no key combo is required.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">10&nbsp;(Legacy) Reset open\u2011firmware \/ NVRAM PPC<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Applies only to PowerPC Macs, which are no longer supported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">11&nbsp;Disconnect external USB\/Thunderbolt devices<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Restart with only the Apple keyboard and mouse connected to rule out hardware or driver conflicts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">12&nbsp;Reinstall \/ update macOS<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cCombo updates\u201d vanished after macOS&nbsp;Big&nbsp;Sur. To refresh the system download the&nbsp;<strong>full macOS&nbsp;Sequoia installer<\/strong>from the Mac&nbsp;App&nbsp;Store or choose&nbsp;<strong>Reinstall macOS<\/strong>&nbsp;in Recovery. Your data remains intact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">13&nbsp;Run Apple&nbsp;Diagnostics<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Apple\u00a0Silicon<\/strong>: from Startup Options press\u00a0<strong>\u2318\u2011D<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Intel<\/strong>: power on holding\u00a0<strong>D<\/strong>\u00a0(or\u00a0<strong>\u2325\u2011D<\/strong>\u00a0for Internet Diagnostics).<br>Note any reference codes produced.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">14&nbsp;Check for bad blocks \/ SSD health<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In Disk Utility choose&nbsp;<strong>View \u203a Show All Devices<\/strong>, select the physical disk and review the&nbsp;<strong>SMART\/Health<\/strong>&nbsp;information. Third\u2011party tools like DriveDx or TechTool&nbsp;Pro offer more granular data. Back up immediately if errors appear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">15&nbsp;Remove added RAM modules<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Only relevant for Intel Macs with user\u2011replaceable RAM. Test each module individually to isolate faulty DIMMs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">16&nbsp;Remove third\u2011party PCIe cards<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Pertains exclusively to the&nbsp;<strong>Mac&nbsp;Pro<\/strong>.
