^^ Segnalo che su Tiger non gira, nonostante i requisiti dichiarati dallo sviluppatore. Ricevo il messaggio che non posso usare l'applicazione con la mia versione del sistema.

Occhio a non sovrascrivere la versione precedente.

Hi there, my name is Diego Massanti and I am the developer behind the MediaInfo Mac application.
I can't understand italian at all (even the fact that my lastname is italian :P ) anyway, if i understand this correctly, the application is crashing for you in Tiger, if so, could you please leave here for me a full copy of the crash report ?

Im working on a new (non tiger compatible) version of MediaInfo Mac btw, with a lot of new features, being the most prominent one the ability to load and compare several different files (lots of user request for that)

Hi, Diego! I'm the second person who has paid something for your donationware: that's what you wrote me in an email after you saw my address through paypal. Here I don't use my real name. As promised I advertised your MediaInfo on this forum, in the BEST FREEWARES' section. Its use is very often suggested to people who have problems with their media files.
I accepted your proposal of doing the italian localization, with the help of some moderators of that forum.. But..
Lester is a serious person and I'm sure he will help you as soon as possible!

Hy there Padmé, thanks for your promotion ;)

Anyway, so just nobody works twice, i will wait 'til the new user interface is past prototyping stage before asking for localizations, right now it is changing daily.
I have moved most of MediaInfo's funcionality into a "Framework" because im working on a totally new app (apart from the new MediaInfo) for video encoding/transcoding/muxing on the mac.

Feel free to contact me via AIM @ massanti@mac.com btw, i would like to keep in contact with you.

Thanks again, Diego.

Just one more try please ?

http://mediainfo.massanti.com/releases/mediainfo_mac_0.7.17.2.dmg.temp

Just remove the ".temp" part from the file name and mount as usual.

I think i have found the problem this time :) (cross fingers)

Thanks in advance, Diego.

Unfortunately you didn't :oops Still same issue.

Thanks for your efforts though :)

Well, i guess its gonna be more complex than i have though.... there is no reason at all why it shouldn't be working... hmm
I will have to check this code and compiler settings with more patience...
Btw, can you provide logs ?, you can use Console.app (its inside "utilities" in your applications folder), select "All Messages" from the list at the left and then type "MediaInfo" (no quotes) in the search box, any interesting log line about the crash / reason why it is refusing to run would be helpful.
Thanks.

Reply to myself... after reading some developer docs at apple.com i think the problem comes down to teh way im linking some of the library in order to reduce the final app size... i think im going to re-check my statically linked libs.. lets see what happens

On my G4 Tiger I don't find anything in the Console, but clicking on the unix executable, the Terminal opens itself and I obtain this message:

Last login: Fri Jul 3 01:52:16 on ttyp1
/Applications/MediaInfo\ Mac.app/Contents/MacOS/MediaInfo\ Mac; exit
Welcome to Darwin!
administrators-power-mac-g4:~ username$ /Applications/MediaInfo\ Mac.app/Contents/MacOS/MediaInfo\ Mac; exit
Bus error
logout
[Processo completato]

Here the same thing on my iMac Leopard:

Last login: Thu Jul 2 14:02:46 on console
/Applications/MediaInfo\ Mac.app/Contents/MacOS/MediaInfo\ Mac ; exit;
Macintosh:~ username$ /Applications/MediaInfo\ Mac.app/Contents/MacOS/MediaInfo\ Mac ; exit;

Now I have a CrashLog for the G4 Tiger, the username here is "test"

This has been useful, TIger is trying to run some of the libraries in 64bit, but there is not 64bit PPC code :)
/me goes to check why this could be happening

By the way, I forgot to ask this before... but is it OK to write in english on these boards ??
We could use other boards if the english language is an issue, i dont want to piss off any italian visitor.

If the moderators think that we are off topic (both for content -troubleshooting- and language) they will split the topic and move the second part somewhere else... Or they will ask us to continue through private messages or emails. Wait and see..

I must tell you that Riker runs Tiger on an Intel mac, I think. I don't remember which Mac Lester has..

Ok, one more test for Tiger testers:

http://mediainfo.massanti.com/releases/mediainfo_mac_0.7.17.3.dmg.temp

Again, remove the .temp part from the file name and mount the image as usual.

Same error message when double clicking on the application icon, but from the Unix executable, I obtained this message in Terminal and then the Mediainfo window opened! And the app works (tried with a mov and a flv file)

Last login: Fri Jul 3 03:59:57 on console
/Applications/MediaInfo\ Mac.app/Contents/MacOS/MediaInfo\ Mac; exit

But if I close the Terminal window also Mediainfo closes.

Alert Message: La chiusura di questa finestra determinerŕ la conclusione dei seguenti processi al suo interno: login, bash, MediaInfo Mac.

Second time (unix executable):

Mediainfo window opens, but before that I have a message window about checking automatically for update.

It's 4.30 in the morning... Bye

Wow Padmé, thanks a lot for your time with this :)

Well we are closer to full Tiger support then, actually, seems like binary speaking, the application is fully compliant, so i guess this is just another case of the "WTF Apple?" karma.

I will take a better look at the info.plist settings and report back :)

Thanks again!

I've separated the troubleshooting posts about Tiger compatibility in this new topic in the "help area", so the other one (http://www.tuttologia.com/macp2p/showthread.php?t=28363) is still dedicated to the updates communications.
No problem for the language and thanks for your work! :smt039

Well, im puting back an old G4 that i had on the basement into my desk.... look what you have just done!

DiegoMax
04-07-09, 00:18
Ok, Found the root of the problems.

Inside the application's info.plist file, there is a key called:

LSMinimumSystemVersion, whose value is "10.4.11", according to apple, this is the minimum system version for the application to run without telling the user to upgrade the OS and showing the info box that everybody here on Tiger was seeing.

Now, it seems that apple never intended to go any higher than 10.4.9 when they first wrote the number checking function, and clearly they are using ascii sorting instead of numeric sorting to compare the version numbers, SOOOO, in Tiger's API, 10.4.11 is OLDER than 10.4.9, because, the first digit after the 4 is a 1.

All this hassle has been caused by a bug in the Cocoa/LaunchServices API itself in Tiger.

More info can be found here : http://trac.transmissionbt.com/ticket/346 and here: http://blog.onesadcookie.com/2007/11/lsminimumsystemversion.html

I will release a new updated version with the key set at a value of 10.4.9, thats it. 2 Wasted days checking and rechecking all my application linking, and it wasnt my fault at all.

/me blames Apple.

Thanks everybody who helped me to test this.
Cheers!

Thanks Padmé for the starts thing ;).

Anyway, some questions:

For the new MediaInfo version im planning to implement a feature called "Copy for Forums". Basically, the idea behind this is to put on the clipboard all the file's information, but properly formatted for displaying in forums/message boards, including BBCode, Tags, etc for proper formatting.

What would be (if any) your preferred format for this ?
