MacBook Air firmware update v1.2 not installing.

A few MacBook Air users have noticed the recently released update for these computers either will not install on their systems or will not show up in the Software Update panel.

Apple recently released an SMC firmware update for MacBook Air notebooks which addresses problems with service-replaceable batteries, and after its release, several users in this Apple Discussion thread have commented on their inability to install the update.

Do you need the update?

If you are unable to install the update, the first thing to check is your ROM version to ensure you need the update. To do this, open System Profiler and click the "Hardware" section (selected at first by default). Then read off the version string next to "SMC Version." If this string is either 1.23f20 or 1.34f8, then you do not need to install this update and the update will more than likely not appear or apply to your system.

Additionally, even if your SMC version differs from the version supplied with the updater, if you are not going to replace your battery in the computer anytime soon then you do not need to install this update. This update only adds support for service-replaceable batteries, so if you choose not to install it just keep a note that you have not updated the firmware. In the future if you need to replace the battery you can have a technician update the firmware when the battery is installed.

Case-sensitive filesystems

One poster noted that this update seems to have a problem with case-sensitive filesystems. If you have your filesystem formatted to be case-sensitive and you cannot update then you may need to change the case of some words in the file name of the updater.

The system logs showed the system trying to launch a file called "MacBook Air SMC Firmware Update", but the file was named "MacBook AIR SMC Firmware Updater". As such, changing the word "AIR" to "Air" in the updater filename to match the system's command call resulted in a proper updating of the system.

This should not affect most users, since the default filesystem format is case-insensitive so file name discrepancies such as this will not cause these problems; however, a few MacBook Air users may have formatted their systems as case-sensitive.
