A dir la verità non l'ho ancora testato perché l'ho appena scoperto, ma i commenti su MacUpdate sono estremamente lusinghieri e non ho trovato segnalazioni precedenti su MacPeer:

X Lossless Decoder (XLD) is a tool for Mac OS X that is able to decode/convert/play various 'lossless' audio files. The supported audio files can be split into some tracks with cue sheet when decoding. It works on Mac OS X 10.3 and later.

Monkey's Audio (.ape)
Wavpack (.wv)

Ho testato più a fondo XLD e devo dire che, oltre a funzionare molto bene, è l'unica applicazione che consente di risolvere in un solo passaggio la conversione con .ape/.cue (selezionando prima il file .cue e poi quello .ape). Lo stesso dicasi di altri file audio di diverso formato che talvolta capita di dover splittare (es. FLAC).

La gamma di formati audio supportati come input e output è soddisfacente (la figura sotto è tratta dal contenuto del pacchetto):

Se qualcun altro lo testa con successo, lo candiderei per i migliori freeware per Mac.

Edit: nelle opzioni di codifica FLAC dà la versione 1.1.3, ma nelle info conferma di essere aggiornato all'ultima 1.1.4.

^^ Mai avuto FLAC, ad es.? Sono comuni e di qualità eccellente. Per trasferirli sull'iPod dovresti convertirli in mp3 o m4a.

Rispetto a Max invece offre meno possibilità di scelta sul rip dei CD.

L'ultima versione di Max consente anche la conversione diretta (senza passare da aiff) da MPC a MP3.
Purtroppo ancora non permette di modificare i tag dei file mpc.

Posto nuovamente il riassunto di diversi post andati perduti con il recente problema hardware.

Ci sono stati numerosi aggiornamenti dell'applicazione, tuttora in corso di frenetico sviluppo. Lo sviluppatore è un tipo piuttosto incredibile, che spesso soddisfa richieste nel giro di ore e rilascia nuove beta.

Riassumere tutti i miglioramenti è arduo; per chi avesse voglia di leggere riporto sotto una version history ridotta. A mio avviso, il miglioramento più importante riguarda la funzione di rip dei CD e della registrazione del ripping in un accurato log, più dettagliato di quello di xACT (l'unico sinora disponibile per Mac, a quanto ne so). Il risultato viene poi confrontato con il database online di http://www.accuraterip.com (http://www.accuraterip.com/) per verificarne l'accuratezza (per utilizzare questa funzione vedi qui (http://www.accuraterip.com/driveoffsets.htm)). Oltre che per i perfezionisti, un log accurato viene in genere richiesto a chi voglia fare upload di musica presso vari tracker torrent privati (attività ovviamente non consigliabile in quanto illegale).

In confronto a Max, le conversioni sono nettamente più veloci su una macchina lenta come la mia (iBook G4 1 GHz, 512 MB RAM).

Feature additions


Added feature to calculate an AccurateRip hash for the existing files. Choose "Check file with AccurateRip" from the File menu.
Added feature to fix a wrong offset of the existing files using AccurateRip database. You can detect and fix an offset from "Detect Offset" and "Save with Offset Correction..." in File menu, after opening a file (with cuesheet) that you want to fix.
Implemented a feature to check offset in the ripping stage. Now XLD performs a real-time offset checking while ripping, when the CD is available in AccurateRip DB. The result is written in the log if found.
Integrated cdparanoia-III 10.2 engine. You can use the old engine by checking "Use old CDParanoia engine" checkbox.
Added option to set the strength of the cache defeating ability. Only for the new engine. Stronger is safer, but slower. Stronger setting will be useful for the drive which has a large cache.
Added feature to scan ReplayGain. You can use this feature by choosing "Scan ReplayGain" in File menu. There is also an option to scan ReplayGain during ripping.

• Introduced a new original secure ripping engine
This is a brand-new secure ripping engine employing a statistical error correction and a cache defeat. Generally it shows a better and more consistent result than the existing CDParanoia engine, especially on slightly damaged discs. At this moment it is not turned on by default, but I recommend everyone try it. Enabled by setting "Ripper Mode" option to "XLD Secure Ripper".
Here is a description of the error in the report:


Jitter error (maybe fixed)
Number of reads which caused a jitter error. The error occurs when seeking between sectors back and forward heavily - the drive fails to return the accurate sector position and returns a slightly moved position. Fixed by the program in most cases.
Retry sector count
Number of sectors which needed a retry read. The program performs a retry read when the 1st and the 2nd (verify) read results do not match (or when C2 error is detected). In case a statistically consistent result was found with the retry reads, this count is incremented. Not a problem in most cases.
Damaged sector count
Number of sectors in which the program was unable to find a statistically consistent result with the retry reads. Bad result in most cases.

• Implemented a new CD ripper backed
Libcdio was used as a backend so far, but now it has been replaced with my original implementation. Many troubles like a hangup on CD-extra discs should be fixed now.
• Removed a support for CDParanoia II 9.8 engine

No, hai ragione tu. E' lo sviluppatore che lavora a ritmo frenetico e annuncia su MacUpdate solo release "ufficiali" cumulative di diversi miglioramenti prima disponibili solo attraverso l'autoaggiornamento. Il "Fixed potential memory leak" sembra essere l'unica novità nella build 126.1 (da te segnalata) e la 126.0 (la mia, che non trova aggiornamenti).

D'ora in poi segnaleremo anche di quale build stiamo parlando, così evitiamo equivoci :)
